Box Office – ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Hits Right Notes Down Under

Pitch Perfect 2 opened in theaters this past weekend down under (Australia and New Zealand) and it did very well.

Pitch Perfect 2 hit all the right notes in Australia and New Zealand, deposing Ultron on its way to an $8.8 million opening weekend. Audiences Down Under embraced the acappella themed comedy sequel with $7.6 million, 348% ahead of the original’s 2012 opening of $2.18 million. Australia went on to be the film’s top performing overseas territory with more than $13 million. In New Zealand, the sequel grabbed more than half the market share for $1.2 million which is the third biggest opening weekend this year behind Furious and Ultron. Pitch Perfect 2 opens in North America next weekend along with 27 other international markets including the UK, Germany, Russia, and the Philippines.

In an early rollout, Universal sequel Pitch Perfect 2 is singing a happy tune Down Under where it has a weekend final of $7.9M (of significantly from its Sunday estimate of $8.8M). Australia was the top overseas market for 2012’s Pitch Perfect with the a cappella-themed comedy earning more than $13M there. Pitch Pefect 2 is currentlyoutpacing it by about 300%. In Oz, the $7.9M weekend is still the 4th biggest debut frame of 2015, behind blockbustersUltron, Furious 7 and Fifty Shades Of Grey. It has 60% market share. In NZ, the starter session was worth an estimated $1.2M, good for the 3rd biggest opening weekend of the year behind F7 and Ultron. North America opens next weekend along with 27 international territories including the UK, Germany, Russia and Philippines.
